Building the first Virtual Hill with Wimbledon X American Express

The ask

As COVID-19 prevented Wimbledon having full capacity during the 2021 tournament, the iconic tennis championship game decided to bring its exciting atmosphere to its audience virtually. In the first-of-its-kind, we set out to create a virtual hill which would allow users to interact while they watched the tennis matches on centre court or at home. Alongside a design director and creative director, we took the project from conception to delivery.

With a tight turnaround, we all took part in ideation sessions to decide on the direction we wanted the project to go. This meant researching previous virtual worlds, gamification ideas and in my case, working on how we could transfer Wimbledon’s classic TOV to a game setting. We then worked with an AI company to begin creating and building the world and avatars and nail down the interactions a user could make when logged in.
